Ledger® Start — Secure Setup Guide for Your Ledger Hardware Wallet
Disclaimer: This is an unofficial educational guide for learning how to securely set up a Ledger hardware wallet. For the official setup wizard, firmware downloads, and customer support, please visit ledger.com/start.
Introduction: Why use a Ledger hardware wallet?
Ledger hardware wallets provide a high level of security for cryptocurrency storage by keeping your private keys offline in a dedicated secure chip. Unlike hot wallets or browser-based wallets, your private keys never leave the device. Transactions are verified and signed inside the hardware wallet, ensuring that malware or phishing websites cannot steal your credentials.
Tip: While Ledger devices significantly reduce the risk of hacks, your security still depends on proper handling of your recovery phrase and verifying every transaction on the device screen.
Before you begin
Your Ledger hardware wallet (e.g., Ledger Nano X or Nano S Plus).
The USB cable or Bluetooth connection (for Nano X).
A computer or smartphone with internet access.
A pen and the recovery sheet included in the box.
Access to the official Ledger website.
Important: Never buy second-hand devices. Always purchase directly from ledger.com or an authorized reseller to avoid tampering risks.
Step 1 — Unbox and inspect your device
When your Ledger arrives, check that the box and packaging are in pristine condition. Ledger devices are sealed and should look new. If the box appears opened or modified, do not use the device — contact Ledger support immediately. No Ledger device should ever come pre-configured or with a printed recovery phrase. The recovery phrase must always be generated on your device screen during setup.
Step 2 — Download and install Ledger Live
Go to ledger.com/start manually by typing the address into your browser.
Download Ledger Live for your operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, or Android).
Install the application and open it.
Ledger Live is the official application used to manage your Ledger device, install apps for different cryptocurrencies, check balances, and update firmware.
Security tip: Do not download Ledger Live from unofficial websites or file-sharing services. Always confirm the site’s SSL certificate (“https://”) and spelling of the domain name.
Step 3 — Initialize your device
Connect your Ledger device to your computer or mobile device using the provided cable.
On the device, follow the on-screen instructions and choose “Set up as new device.”
Select a secure PIN code (typically 4 to 8 digits). You’ll need this PIN each time you use the device.
The device will now display your 24-word recovery phrase — write it down carefully, word-for-word, in order, on the provided recovery sheet.
Never: Take a photo, type, or store your recovery phrase digitally. Whoever has those 24 words has full access to your crypto funds.
Step 4 — Confirm your recovery phrase
After writing down all 24 words, your device will ask you to confirm them by selecting the correct words in the right order. This ensures you’ve written them correctly and can recover your wallet later if the device is lost or reset.
Once confirmed, store your recovery sheet in a secure, private location — ideally in a safe or safety deposit box. Some users also engrave their phrase into a metal backup plate for long-term durability against fire or water damage.
Step 5 — Install cryptocurrency apps
Each cryptocurrency (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin) requires its own app on your Ledger device. To install them:
Open Ledger Live and navigate to the Manager tab.
Connect and unlock your device with your PIN.
Approve Ledger Live’s access request on your device.
Select and install the apps for the coins you plan to manage.
Ledger devices have limited storage for apps, but you can safely uninstall and reinstall apps later — your crypto assets remain safe as long as you have your recovery phrase.
Step 6 — Add accounts in Ledger Live
Once the coin apps are installed, you can add accounts to Ledger Live:
Open Ledger Live and go to the Accounts tab.
Click Add account and choose a cryptocurrency (e.g., Bitcoin).
Follow the prompts to connect and verify the account on your Ledger device.
Your accounts will now appear in Ledger Live, showing balances and transaction histories for the cryptocurrencies you added.
Step 7 — Receiving crypto securely
In Ledger Live, click Receive on the desired account.
The app will generate a receiving address. Verify that the address shown on your computer matches the address displayed on your Ledger device screen.
Copy the verified address and share it with the sender.
Always verify addresses on the device itself. A compromised computer could display a false address to redirect your funds. The device screen is the only trusted source.
Step 8 — Sending crypto securely
Click Send in Ledger Live and fill in the recipient’s address and amount.
Double-check all transaction details on your device screen.
Approve the transaction by pressing both buttons on your device.
Ledger devices sign transactions internally, ensuring private keys never leave the secure chip.
Step 9 — Keeping your wallet updated
Regularly check for firmware updates in Ledger Live’s Manager section.
Ensure Ledger Live itself is up to date to benefit from the latest features and security improvements.
Never download “firmware updates” from unofficial links or third-party websites.
Step 10 — Advanced option: Passphrase feature
For additional privacy, you can add a custom passphrase to your recovery phrase. This creates a hidden wallet that’s only accessible when you enter that exact passphrase.
Use this only if you fully understand the implications. Forgetting the passphrase permanently locks that hidden wallet.
Keep the passphrase secret and separate from your recovery phrase.
Caution: If you forget your passphrase, funds in the hidden wallet are permanently lost.
Best security practices
Keep your recovery phrase offline in at least two separate secure locations.
Never share your PIN, recovery phrase, or passphrase — not even with Ledger support.
Be alert to phishing attacks and fake support sites.
Use the latest version of Ledger Live from the official website.
For large holdings, consider a fireproof metal backup for your seed phrase.
Troubleshooting common issues
Device not recognized: Try a different USB cable or port, restart Ledger Live, or reinstall the app.
Firmware update failed: Disconnect and retry through Ledger Live’s official update feature.
Forgot PIN: Reset the device and restore it using your 24-word recovery phrase.
Lost recovery phrase: Unfortunately, Ledger cannot recover your wallet. Move funds immediately if you still control the device, then create a new wallet.
Routine maintenance
Keep your Ledger wallet healthy by:
Checking firmware updates monthly.
Reviewing transaction history for unexpected activity.
Testing your recovery process periodically using a spare device or test wallet.
